Before the scan
The R2 tray
The tray is not an extra step. It is what makes the superimposition possible when there are no teeth for it to stand on.
When it is needed
- Full edentulism. There are no reference teeth — without a tray there is no superimposition.
- Extensive partial edentulism, when the remaining teeth are few or mobile.
- Heavy metal restorations, where the streaking destroys the reference surfaces.
Where there are enough stable teeth and a clean scan, the tray is not necessary.
Preparation
- Build the base plate on the model, with stable and repeatable seating.
- Place the reference markers according to the protocol.
- Try it in the mouth: the tray must seat on its own, with no pressure.
- Take the CBCT with the tray in place and the patient slightly open.
The patient does not bite. With the tray in place, the bite block stays out. A hard bite displaces the tray and voids the scan — and that does not show on the machine’s screen, it shows in the superimposition.

- The CBCT with the tray in place.
- A scan of the tray out of the mouth, or the tray itself.
- An impression or model of the opposing arch.
